The CG Challenges are the largest online art contests of their kind, with huge amounts of sponsorship and publicity for each challenge. Working within guidelines and software limitations, artists are challenged to create outstanding artworks based upon set themes while showing their work-in-progress to the community.
Steampunk - Myths & Legends - 10 Novemeber 2008 - 3 February 2009
Steampunk is the application of advanced steam age technology to a modern or science fiction setting. This challenge asks you to render traditional myths and legends in the steampunk style using elements of gears, springs, brass and steam power.

Aliens are a common theme in CG art. They are a popular subject in science fiction and fantasy genres and feature strongly in the imaginations of our generation. In this, the 22nd CGChallenge, entrants are challenged to depict the relations between humans and aliens.
Strange Behavior

This challenge draws on one of the most popular artistic themes - unusual behaviors and relationships. Whether it’s a giant robot admiring a fluffy teddy or a sheep in wolf's clothing; a cow that thinks it’s a helicopter or a warrior going into battle dressed as a giant pink bunny - they all make you stop and think.

The final works demonstrated a depth of story and views that showed the character(s) up close and the journey beyond. This could have been metaphorical but if so ithad to be clear (without any explanation) how the image depicted a character departing on a great journey.

Spectacular

What makes something Spectacular? That's a good question. It's also the key to fame and fortune if you can learn how to turn out truly spectacular images on demand. The reason is that spectacular images are some of the most widely sought after and most commercially valuable. It's part of the human nature to be entertained by the spectacular.
Master and Servant
21 March – 18 May 2005

The Master and Servant Challenge explores and exposes the motives, emotions and expressions evoked in a myriad of unequal relationships that pervade the human condition.The theme can be taken to encompass an entire spectrum from benevolent leader and adoring followers to maniacal dictator and abused slaves. Whatever you choose to depict, the image must convey the relationship; the attitude and action; and the emotions of the Master and Servant archetypes.
Grand Space Opera
18 October 2004 – 17 January 2005
Contestants were asked to 'Think big – really, really big!' and create an iconic image that captured a pivotal moment in a vast galactic spanning civilisation... a civilisation so vast that the only thread holding it together is a shared legacy of common legends. Legends of heroes, of heroic battles won against unimaginable odds, of crushing defeats and enemies that swarm through entire galaxies.
Machineflesh Challenge
16 March 2004 - 18 June 2004
Combining two popular themes (characters and machines), contestants were tasked to create an image depicting a mechanically altered or enhanced organic lifeform. This fifteenth challenge run by CGSociety received over 1400 entries in the 3D category and over 700 2D entries, making it almost twice as large as the previously run challenge, and setting the record as the largest online art contest ever run!
Alienware Challenge
20 October 2003 - 20 January 2004
It was the largest 3D art contest to ever run on the Web. Held over three months between 20 October 2003 - 20 January 2004, the Alienware Challenge hosted by CGSociety attracted 1524 artists to the contest, of which 3876 images were uploaded and 146 emerged meeting all requirements for the final judging
